Best Action Camera for Travel: DJI vs Insta360 vs GoPro
The action-camera market has changed fast.
DJI has continued improving the Osmo Action 6, Insta360 has launched the new X6, GoPro has replaced the old HERO-style upgrade cycle with its new MISSION 1 lineup, and DJI now has the Osmo 360 II as well.
So if I were buying a camera specifically for travel today, these are the ones I'd look at.

DJI Osmo Action 6 — Best Overall
The Action 6 is still my favourite all-around choice.
It has a 1/1.1-inch square sensor, variable f/2.0–f/4.0 aperture, 50GB of usable internal storage and up to 8K/30fps recording. DJI has also continued updating it with features including Portrait mode, film tones, 2× lossless zoom and 4K Live Photo.
For me, its biggest advantage is simplicity.
You can pull it out, get the shot and put it back in your pocket without turning your vacation into a camera-production exercise.
Who it's for: Travellers who want one rugged camera for walking, biking, beaches, sightseeing and vlogging.
Skip it if: You specifically want 360 video or maximum cinematic control.
Insta360 X6 — Best for Creative Travel
The new Insta360 X6 is one of the biggest upgrades in this category.
It uses new 1/1.1-inch square sensors, records 8K/50fps 360 video and shoots up to 120MP 360 photos.
The advantage is simple: you don't have to worry as much about framing while you're shooting.
Capture everything first, then choose the angle later.
That's fantastic for sightseeing, road trips, cycling and those invisible-selfie-stick shots that make it look like someone else is filming you.
Who it's for: Travellers who enjoy creative video and don't mind doing some editing afterward.
Skip it if: You want the fastest and simplest workflow.
GoPro MISSION 1 PRO — GoPro's New Direction
I'm skipping the HERO13 here because GoPro's newest generation is the MISSION 1 Series.
The flagship MISSION 1 PRO uses a 50MP 1-inch sensor and new GP3 processor with 8K/60fps and 4K/240fps recording. GoPro has also released Creator Editions and a growing accessory system around it.
This isn't just another HERO update.
GoPro is moving toward a small rugged cinema camera that can still handle action-camera duties.
Who it's for: Serious travel creators who want maximum image quality and slow motion.
Skip it if: You just want something small, simple and reasonably priced.
Don't Forget the DJI Osmo 360 II
DJI's Osmo 360 II is now out as well, giving the X6 some serious competition.
It offers native 8K/60fps 360 recording, replaceable lenses, 105GB of usable internal storage and AI subject tracking.
If you're already invested in DJI gear, I'd definitely compare the 360 II with the X6 before buying a 360 camera.

DJI Osmo Action 6.
It gives you excellent image quality, internal storage, strong stabilization and an easy workflow without forcing you into a more complicated camera system.
Is It Worth Upgrading?
If you already own a recent action camera, don't upgrade just because something newer exists.
I'd upgrade for a larger sensor, much better slow motion, better low light, 360 capture or a feature that actually changes how you shoot.
Otherwise, keep using what you have.
Final Winner
🥇 DJI Osmo Action 6
For most travellers, it's still the camera I'd buy.
The X6 is more creative.
The MISSION 1 PRO is more powerful.
And the Osmo 360 II is a very interesting new 360 option.
But for throwing one camera in a bag and enjoying the trip, DJI Action 6 gets my vote.
