Apple finally updated the AirTag in 2026, and the basic idea hasn't changed.
Put it on something you don't want to lose and track it through Apple's Find My network.
What has changed is the finding hardware.
The second-generation AirTag gets improved Ultra Wideband technology, longer Precision Finding range and a louder speaker, making it easier to locate something that's buried under a couch cushion or sitting somewhere in the house.
It still uses a replaceable CR2032 battery, and Apple rates battery life at more than a year. It's also IP67 water and dust-resistant.

Buy the AirTag 2 if you use an iPhone and want the simplest possible tracker.

If you're using a Samsung Galaxy phone, the SmartTag2 makes a lot more sense.
Samsung gives it Bluetooth tracking plus Ultra Wideband support on compatible Galaxy devices, and the SmartThings Find network helps locate items once they're outside normal Bluetooth range.
The Bluetooth range is rated at up to 120 metres in ideal conditions.
Samsung also gives the SmartTag2 an IP67 rating and a replaceable CR2032 battery with battery life rated at up to 500 days under typical use.
And unlike the AirTag, there's already a proper loop built into it.
That's a small thing, but I like not having to buy another accessory just to put a tracker on my keys.

Galaxy owners.
If your phone is a Samsung, this would be one of my first choices.
Who Should Skip It
People using other Android brands.
The SmartTag2 is very much a Samsung ecosystem product, and that's its biggest limitation.

This might be the most interesting option of the bunch.
The Chipolo POP can work with Apple Find My or Google's Find Hub, although you choose one network at a time.

Which Bluetooth Tracker Would I Buy?
This is one of those product categories where there isn't a single winner for everybody.
