Celestron NexYZ vs NexGO: Which Phone Adapter Fits?

Quick verdict
Choose NexGO when its clamps fit your phone and eyepiece and you prefer a folding adapter with two-axis centring. Choose NexYZ when you need its three-axis adjustment or its different eyepiece-clamp range. The NexYZ vs NexGO decision starts with measurements: the more adjustable model is not automatically the one that fits every phone or optical instrument.
This guide combines manufacturer documentation with practical buying considerations. It is research-based and does not claim hands-on testing or measured performance.
Check the outside eyepiece diameter
Celestron specifies an eyepiece clamp range of 25.4–44.45 mm for NexGO and 35–60 mm for NexYZ. Measure the outside surface that the adapter will grip. Do not substitute the telescope's focuser size or another optical specification for that measurement.
Celestron also provides an eyepiece compatibility checker covering the relevant NexGO and NexYZ model numbers. Use the exact adapter and eyepiece combination rather than interpreting the word universal as a guarantee of fit.
Phone-clamp ranges are different too
The published NexGO phone-clamp range is 58–103 mm, while the NexYZ DX kit page lists 65–90 mm. That means the model with more adjustment axes does not have the broader stated phone-width range.
Measure the phone as you intend to use it, including a case if one will remain fitted. Clamp width is only one part of compatibility: the camera position, camera bump and access to controls also deserve inspection. A phone that fits between the jaws may still require careful positioning to align the intended camera.

What the extra Z adjustment does
NexGO provides X and Y knobs for positioning the phone camera over the eyepiece. NexYZ adds a Z control, allowing adjustment of the phone's distance relative to the eyepiece as well as its centring.
That extra control is useful when distance is the part of alignment that needs attention. It is not a promise of higher resolution or an automatic cure for a poorly matched setup. The phone, eyepiece, optical instrument and support still determine what you can capture.
Storage and kit contents
Celestron describes NexGO as folding for transport and storage. If the adapter will live in a small bag between occasional sessions, that is a practical feature to compare.
The NexYZ DX kit includes the NexYZ adapter and a Bluetooth shutter-release remote. Check the exact listing: a kit and an adapter-only offer are not necessarily the same purchase. Choose the remote-equipped bundle because you want that control, rather than assuming every version includes it.
A useful fitting test
With the optical instrument supported, align the intended phone camera and check the complete preview. Confirm that you can centre the view and adjust the distance where the adapter allows it. Inspect any dark edge or obstruction before assuming that software cropping is the answer.
This is a suggested fitting process, not a report of hands-on testing. We have not measured setup time, stability or image quality for these adapters. Manufacturer claims about quick adjustment are not a substitute for checking your own phone and eyepiece.
Best value and who can skip the upgrade
NexGO is the sensible starting comparison when its dimensions fit and two-axis alignment meets the job. NexYZ earns a closer look when you need the third adjustment or an eyepiece diameter outside NexGO's stated range.
Keep an existing adapter if it holds the phone securely and gives you a usable aligned view. Buying another adjustment knob will not correct an unstable support, an unsuitable eyepiece or a camera app using the wrong phone camera.
Before using it on an outing
Fit the phone and practise adjustment indoors before depending on the adapter during a birdwatching trip. Check that the clamps are engaged as instructed and that controls remain accessible.
Try the phone orientations and camera controls you expect to use. Check whether you can return to an aligned view after removing and refitting the phone. A repeatable fit with your own equipment is more useful than choosing on the number of knobs alone.
Final choice
Choose the adapter whose measured clamp ranges and adjustment method suit your equipment. NexGO offers folding storage and two-axis centring; NexYZ offers a third axis and a different eyepiece range. Check the phone-width limitation and bundle contents before paying for the more elaborate option.
