Windscreens are consumable gear

A microphone wind cover absorbs dirt, moisture and repeated handling during outdoor filming. Its purpose is to reduce airflow noise, but a badly fitted or degraded cover can rub the capsule and create noise of its own. Inspect it before important shoots.

Dry covers after rain

Storing damp foam or synthetic fur in a sealed camera pouch can encourage unpleasant odours and contamination. Follow the accessory maker's washing instructions and allow the cover to dry completely. Do not apply intense direct heat that might deform the material or damage adhesive.

Keep the capsule protected

Remove a cover carefully so the microphone's grille or suspension is not bent. Do not spray cleaning liquid into the microphone itself. If the cover becomes loose enough to slide across sound openings, replace it with one designed for the exact microphone model.

Look for wear and deformation

Flattened fur, torn foam, stretched elastic and lost retention clips can reduce performance. A cover that enters the lens's field of view or contacts a gimbal motor is a problem even if its sound protection seems adequate.

Test after cleaning

Record speech in a light breeze and compare it with an earlier sample when possible. Listen for unexpected high-frequency muffling or rubbing noise. Wind protection cannot remove background traffic or compensate for a microphone placed far from the speaker.

Buy replacements carefully

Match dimensions and mounting style rather than trusting a universal listing. A spare cover is a small accessory worth carrying if outdoor recording matters. Keep it clean in a separate compartment so it is ready when conditions change.

Pack a clean replacement separately

If wind protection is essential to a travel shoot, store a spare fitted windscreen in a clean pouch away from wet batteries or dirty charging cables. Check that the retaining band has not stretched and that fur or foam will not brush a camera's moving parts. A damaged cover that repeatedly falls off can be more distracting than having no accessory for a short sheltered recording.
