Understand the choices
Wide-mouth and narrow-mouth bottles can both carry the same quantity of water, but opening shape affects filling, cleaning and drinking while moving. A large opening is convenient for adding ice or using a brush, while a narrow neck may reduce splashing during a quick sip.
What the first option offers
Wide openings are useful when a refill source is awkward or you need to inspect the inside of the bottle. Some designs also accept compatible water-treatment accessories. However, a large opening may spill more easily while walking on uneven ground.

Where the alternative helps
Narrow mouths can be comfortable for controlled drinking but may be harder to clean thoroughly, especially around bottle threads or complicated lids. A narrow opening does not by itself guarantee a better seal or a more durable bottle.
Compatibility and safe handling
Material, weight and lid reliability still matter. A rigid bottle should fit the backpack pocket securely and be easy to remove with gloves. A heavy insulated model may be unnecessary on a short mild-weather hike when a lighter bottle meets the task.
Long-term ownership
Water safety is separate from bottle design. Neither mouth size makes untreated source water safe. Plan refilling opportunities and use a suitable treatment method where required. After a trip, empty and dry the bottle completely rather than leaving moisture trapped under the cap.
Making a practical selection
Choose a wide mouth when cleaning and filling convenience dominate. A narrow mouth can be easier for sipping on the move. Test the actual lid, flow and carrying pocket before paying extra for a shape that does not fit your normal routine.
Check before using it
Fill the bottle, seal it and invert it safely over a sink before placing it in a bag. Check whether the cap can be operated one-handed without dropping the bottle. If the lid has a narrow spout or valve, follow the maker's cleaning instructions to avoid residue building inside.
