Leaving The Forks: Cinematic Passenger Window Shots with the DJI Pocket 3
As we left The Forks and headed toward the bridge, I decided to try something different—filming handheld out the passenger window using the DJI Pocket 3, a ND16 filter, and D-Log color profile. What I got was a smooth, cinematic slice of city life in motion.
🎥 The Setup
Camera: DJI Pocket 3
Shooting Profile: D-Log (for color grading flexibility)
Filter: ND16 (to cut glare and slow the shutter)
Mode: 4K 30fps handheld
Mount: Handheld resting on door frame for stabilization
🚘 Scene Breakdown
Filming through the passenger window adds a dynamic, real-world perspective—city textures, sunlight shifts, and the subtle movement of the car all come together for immersive b-roll. Starting near the Indigenous Museum, we drove slowly past The Forks, through the parkland paths, and toward the Esplanade Riel Bridge.
The ND16 filter kept highlights from blowing out and gave motion blur a natural feel as we rolled past bikes, buildings, and pedestrians. D-Log let me capture the full tonal range of the environment, perfect for color grading later.
💡 Quick Filming Tips
Slightly crack the window to avoid reflections
Keep elbows braced on the armrest or door to steady the shot
Use Follow mode with minimal joystick input
Shoot in 4K D-Log to grade later for that cinematic look
Time it for golden hour if possible—shadows and warmth elevate everything

🎨 The Look in Post
Grading the D-Log footage brought out the blue sky, rich building tones, and soft blur of passing foreground elements. It felt like a travel sequence straight from a documentary.
