Long Camera Recordings: Dummy Battery or Spare Batteries?

Runtime is more than battery life
Long recordings can end because of heat, firmware limits, storage constraints or battery power. Before buying a power accessory, check your exact camera model's supported recording duration and whether it accepts external power while operating. A larger supply cannot eliminate unrelated limitations.
How dummy batteries work
A dummy battery sits inside the camera battery compartment and connects to a compatible supply. It can provide power without repeated battery swaps, but voltage, polarity and coupler compatibility must match the camera. A USB-C connection alone does not establish electrical safety.
The case for spare cells
Quality spare batteries are portable and avoid trailing cables. They suit outdoor filming and short takes when you can pause the recording. A battery swap may interrupt an interview or require checking settings afterward, making it less attractive for continuous events.
Route cables safely
External power leads can snag on a tripod or create a trip hazard. Follow the manufacturer's guidance for compartment doors and cable routing, and never force a battery adapter into place. Avoid using damaged batteries or supplies and leave space for heat dissipation.
Rehearse the full recording
Test the complete setup with the camera, recording mode, memory card and actual external source before an important event. Watch for sudden shutdowns, temperature warnings and loose connectors. Bring a charged compatible battery as a fallback even if continuous power seems reliable.
Choose by shooting style
For a fixed indoor interview, a tested external adapter may be practical. For a mobile walk, regular batteries are less cumbersome. The most useful solution is the one that keeps the entire camera system operating safely, not merely the accessory with the longest advertised runtime.
Power decisions on location
A USB power bank, mains adapter and dummy coupler form a chain in which every component must be appropriate for the camera. The most powerful-looking source is not necessarily the correct one. If the camera has a locking battery door, do not operate it in an unsupported open configuration. A short test clip cannot prove several hours of stability, so make a rehearsal at the duration and recording settings you actually intend to use. Keep battery backups charged.
