Nanlite PavoTube II 6C vs II 15C: Choose the Right Length

Quick verdict

Choose PavoTube II 6C when you need a small RGBWW accent that can hide behind a product, furniture or a set detail. Choose II 15C when a longer illuminated line or broader linear source is part of the shot. Start by drawing the composition and measuring the available mounting space. A longer tube can be useful, but it is not automatically an upgrade if the light must disappear into a small corner.

Nominal tube sizes are not the complete dimensions

Nanlite sells II 6C as a 10-inch tube and II 15C as a 2-foot tube. Its specifications list overall lengths of approximately 25cm and 77cm respectively. The nominal category is therefore not a substitute for measuring the whole product. Allow room for the support, cable and access to the controls. This is especially relevant inside a shelf, beneath a table or behind a narrow background panel where a lamp can fit lengthwise yet be impossible to aim or connect.

Where the compact II 6C earns its place

The II 6C includes an internal battery, built-in magnets, quarter-inch threads at both ends and USB-C charging. Those features suit a small lamp placed close to the object being accented. Confirm that a magnetic surface is suitable and that the light can be secured in the intended position. Compactness also limits the size of the source visible in a reflection. For shiny product work, think about the highlight shape you want rather than choosing by the lamp's physical footprint alone.

What the longer II 15C changes

The II 15C offers a substantially longer body and documented internal-battery, AC-adapter and USB-C PD power routes. It can be a better candidate when the illuminated tube itself belongs in the composition or when a longer reflection is useful on a product. Plan compatible tube clips and support rather than assuming the 6C's integrated magnetic arrangement carries over. A longer tube also needs more carrying and clearance space, even when both lights are used at low brightness.

Effects and control: do not confuse model families

Both models provide adjustable white light and RGBWW colour control. These C models should not be bought on the assumption that every PavoTube feature applies to them: X, XR and the newer 6CP are distinct products, and pixel effects are not a standard C-series feature. Nanlite documents direct NANLINK app control for II 6C with the appropriate firmware. If buying an older unit, confirm its firmware and control requirements before planning a grouped setup. II 15C additionally documents wired DMX/RDM control.

Useful light is not the same as a visible glow

A tube can look bright in the frame while contributing little illumination to a distant subject. Placement, colour setting and the distance to the surface matter. Saturated blue and white modes should not be treated as equivalent exposure settings. This guide contains no hands-on brightness, battery or colour measurements. For a face lit from farther away, compare manufacturer photometrics at the intended distance and decide whether a different key light would serve the job better.

Value and final choice

My research-based choice is II 6C for discreet close accents and II 15C for a longer visible line or reflection that the compact tube cannot provide. Skip the longer model if you have no place to mount or transport it. Skip a multi-light kit if one carefully positioned tube meets the design. Keep an existing tube when its length and output already work. Compare the exact C-series version, tube count, included clips and power adapters, delivered price and local warranty before ordering.
