Frame the task before the gear
A desk arm needs a sturdy clamp, a tabletop that can tolerate the pressure and enough reach to frame the work surface. Long extension arms amplify movement when the desk is bumped. Check whether the arm can carry the phone and any attached light or microphone.

Where a desk arm works best
Floor stands avoid clamping onto furniture and can handle front-facing talking shots. Their trade-off is floor space: tripod legs become an obstacle in cramped rooms. A tall centre column can also wobble, so stability at your intended filming height is more useful than maximum height alone.
Why floor stands remain useful
Verify the phone clamp's supported width with your case attached. Make sure tilt and rotation locks hold position without drifting. Protect nearby screens and do not place a top-heavy phone stand where children, pets or passersby can knock it over.
Mount security and vibration
For repeatable overhead demonstrations, start by assessing a secure desk arm. For full-body framing or frequent angle changes, a compact floor tripod is often more flexible.
Which support fits your room?
The best phone support depends on camera position rather than the tallest advertised height. A desk clamp may provide a useful overhead angle for craft work and product demonstrations. A floor tripod offers more freedom to move the whole camera away from the table.
Choose the view you need repeatedly
For an overhead view of a desk, look at how far the phone can reach horizontally without the arm drifting downward. If you film food, crafts or electronics, make sure the clamp and arm do not obstruct your hands or light source. A floor stand can be repositioned for vertical social videos or talking-head framing, but may transmit vibration from passing feet. Consider cable routing if you need continuous power: a dangling cable can pull against a phone mount. Stabilize the setup, then capture a short test clip to check horizon, background clutter and whether the phone stays in the same position after several minutes.
