Power comes from somewhere
A bus-powered hub draws its operating electricity from the laptop connection. A separately powered hub or dock may offer an additional electrical supply for attached devices. The distinction matters when several external drives, readers and accessories need power.
Bus power versus a separate supply
An ordinary USB-C hub may draw its operating power from the laptop. A powered dock can use a dedicated supply to support attached accessories, but not all products marketed as powered work the same way. Look at the input and output ratings for each port.

Pass-through charging is different
Some compact hubs accept a USB-C charger and pass power onward to the laptop while providing other ports. The hub itself may consume some of the available power. Check whether the laptop receives enough for normal editing and whether the port allocation changes when additional devices are connected.
Data remains limited by the interface
A powered hub does not automatically increase available USB bandwidth. Several external SSDs and card readers can still share the same upstream connection. Confirm the supported interface and real transfer speeds before using a hub for simultaneous large footage backups.
When a compact hub is convenient
A small bus-powered unit may be ideal for occasional memory-card imports, a single drive and minimal travel luggage. It avoids a bulky power brick. However, an attached device with higher power needs may disconnect or refuse to start when the host cannot supply enough electricity.
Build for reliability
A powered dock can be practical at a permanent editing desk with multiple peripherals. Test your laptop, display and storage together before an important deadline. Predictable connections and suitable electrical ratings matter more than having every possible port in one device.
Inspect the whole connection
A USB-C cable can support charging without offering the data rate or video output your setup needs. The hub, laptop and cable must each support the intended functions. During travel, short cables can put strain on a laptop port if heavy accessories hang freely. Support connected hardware rather than leaving it suspended from a fragile connector.
