SmallRig RC60B vs amaran COB 60x S: battery convenience or modifier flexibility?

The SmallRig RC60B vs amaran COB 60x S decision is about the complete power and modifier setup, not just the light body. Choose RC60B for a compact light with a built-in battery that is easy to move between short setups. Choose amaran COB 60x S when full-size Bowens modifier compatibility and your existing lighting system matter more. The decisive costs are the power and modifier accessories needed for your actual shoot.

Research-based comparison, checked October 18, 2026. This is not a hands-on test or an ownership claim. Manufacturer specifications, cited reviews and our buying analysis are distinguished below.

Priority

Better starting point

Short mobile setups without a separate battery

RC60B

Existing full-size Bowens modifiers

amaran COB 60x S

Battery-powered amaran operation

Budget for compatible external batteries

Guaranteed silent operation

Neither should be assumed silent; test near your microphone

Look at the complete kit on a light stand

A small light head is only part of a usable setup. Add the stand, modifier, power source, cables and any mounting adapter, then decide what you can reasonably carry. A light that looks tiny in a product photograph can require a surprisingly large bag once it is ready for an interview.

SmallRig’s RC60B has a built-in battery and bi-colour output. amaran’s COB 60x S uses a full-size Bowens mount and can run from its included mains supply or supported external battery arrangements. Both cover the common warm-to-daylight adjustment range, but that shared feature does not settle portability or modifier fit.

When RC60B makes the most sense

RC60B is appealing when you frequently move a small light between rooms, shoot short clips or want to avoid a separate battery plate during quick setups. SmallRig quotes about 45 minutes at full output under its test conditions; treat that as a planning reference, not a guaranteed runtime in every environment.

Its modifier mount is Mini Bowens, not automatically compatible with every full-size Bowens softbox. Check the exact accessory or supported adapter before buying. The cheapest body-only offer may be less attractive once the modifier you need is included.

USB-C power is convenient only when the supply and cable meet the light’s requirements. SmallRig recommends a suitable high-power PD source. A phone charger or an arbitrary power bank should not be assumed capable of sustaining full output.

When amaran COB 60x S is the better system purchase

The amaran’s full-size Bowens mount is a practical advantage if you already own compatible modifiers. Its Sidus Link control can also be useful when the light is out of reach or integrated with a compatible lighting setup.

For battery use, the included dual NP-F plate still needs appropriate batteries, sold separately. The plate’s V-mount-style attachment to the light does not mean the package includes a V-mount battery. Price the batteries, charger and any required cable before comparing it with an internally powered light.

This is also a bi-colour light, not an RGB colour-effects panel. If you mainly want coloured accents behind a product, a small RGB light may be a cheaper and more appropriate tool.

Fan noise, output and value need context

Both designs use active cooling. Newsshooter’s hands-on RC60B review described audible fan-related considerations in quiet locations and discussed the output trade-off in ECO mode. Do a room-and-microphone test for your own recording distance rather than assuming a small fixture is silent.

Do not compare advertising lux numbers measured with different reflectors or beam angles as though they describe identical illumination. A narrow reflector can produce a high centre reading without providing the same coverage as a softbox. Compare the light on the face or product at your working distance.

In Canada and the US, older-stock availability and bundles can change the value decision. Check the exact model, supported modifiers, included supply, returns and local service. We have not measured these lights side by side, so this guide does not declare a numerical brightness winner.

Questions before you buy

Can I fit every Bowens softbox directly to RC60B?

No. RC60B uses Mini Bowens. Confirm a model-specific modifier or supported adapter and the permitted load.

Does the amaran package include batteries?

The manufacturer says the dual NP-F plate is included, while batteries are sold separately. Check your particular bundle.

Final buying decision

RC60B wins for short, simple mobile setups with internal power. COB 60x S is the stronger starting point for a full-size Bowens workflow. Compare a complete usable kit and test fan noise before choosing either for quiet dialogue recording.

Compare the exact model, camera-system version where applicable, included accessories, seller, warranty service, return policy and delivered total. Canadian and US prices and availability can differ. Amazon searches may also show other models; confirm the listing before ordering.
