A power figure needs context

A USB-C hub may advertise a 100W pass-through input, yet supply less than that to its connected laptop. Some of the incoming energy is reserved for the hub and its ports. Check the maker's stated delivered output rather than assuming its input label equals laptop charging power.

Laptop negotiation determines use

USB Power Delivery involves compatible voltage and current profiles negotiated between charger, hub and computer. A laptop requiring more power than the chain delivers may charge slowly or consume its battery during heavy editing. A larger charger alone cannot correct an incompatible hub.

USB-C hub and laptop charging connection detail

Hub ports share resources

External SSDs, card readers and monitors can add power and bandwidth demands. Some hubs reduce available downstream charging or reconfigure power when devices attach. Read the actual model's simultaneous-use table, not just the top-line number on its product page.

Cable ratings also matter

A connector that fits a USB-C port is not proof that it supports the desired power and data. Check the cable's current rating, construction and any certification, and confirm the hub's host lead can support the intended arrangement. Avoid stacking unverified adapters.

Watch for transfer disruption

Connecting or disconnecting a charger can cause some hubs to renegotiate power. A linked storage device might briefly disconnect, which is particularly troublesome during large video imports. Test the exact working setup before copying footage that cannot easily be recreated.

Choose around actual workload

If a laptop and external display are used together, prioritize stable power and dependable connections over the hub's number of advertised ports. The best hub is the one whose supported delivered power, data modes and physical layout match your specific equipment.

Check the complete setup

Connect the laptop's intended charger through the hub while a representative editing project is open. Check system charging status and copy a test folder to an external SSD. A hub that repeatedly disconnects during this routine is unsuitable even if its peak specifications look excellent.
