List the actual ports you use

SD card readers vary in supported card standards and real transfer speed. An expensive UHS-II card will not reach its potential through a reader that only supports slower modes. Likewise, multiple external drives may share the hub's upstream bandwidth.

Card transfer speed and bottlenecks

A USB-C socket does not guarantee external monitor output. The laptop and hub must support the required display mode, resolution and refresh rate. Read host compatibility specifications instead of assuming that an HDMI connector always works.

Display output is not universal

Pass-through charging can leave less usable power for the computer than the charger advertises, because the hub uses some itself. Check input, output and cable ratings. Compact multiport hubs can become warm under sustained transfer loads; follow their operating guidance.

Power delivery and heat

Choose a hub when simplicity and desk portability are priorities. A dedicated high-performance card reader or adapter may be preferable when one demanding task matters most.

When separate adapters make sense

A hub is useful when a laptop has too few connectors for cards, drives, displays and charging. Start with the devices you truly connect at the same time. Buying a hub with many unused ports often adds cost without improving the editing experience.

Plan the desk connection

If your workflow uses an external SSD and an SD reader simultaneously, ask whether both ports share a single USB connection to the laptop. With large photo folders, shared bandwidth can lengthen transfers. Confirm whether your editing laptop already has a high-quality reader before paying for a second. A hub with an Ethernet port may be useful for uploading large files, but it also adds size and cabling. For monitor output, look at the laptop's published support for DisplayPort Alternate Mode or relevant Thunderbolt or USB4 capabilities. A powered dock can be worthwhile for a permanent desk, whereas a compact hub is usually more convenient in a camera bag.
