USB-C Power Bank Pass-Through Charging: Useful or Risky?

What pass-through means
Some power banks allow their internal battery to charge while the bank supplies power to another device. Others interrupt output or change wattage when an input is connected. The feature varies by model and should not be assumed from the number of USB ports alone.
Why filmmakers ask about it
An external battery may power a small camera or recharge a phone during a long event. Being able to recharge the bank without disconnecting the load sounds attractive, but a change in output can interrupt recording if the camera depends on uninterrupted external power.

The electrical chain matters
Check the bank's stated input and output ratings when pass-through is active. An advertised maximum PD wattage may apply only when the bank is discharging normally. Use a source and cable that support the correct negotiated USB-C power profiles.
Heat and battery wear
Simultaneous charging and discharging can increase the power bank's thermal workload. Some products limit the feature for that reason. Keep the unit ventilated and within its operating-temperature guidance; avoid leaving it wrapped under clothing while charging.
Test your camera separately
Some cameras accept power while recording, others only charge an internal battery while switched off. A supported power bank feature does not change the camera's own limitations. Test a full recording session using the actual camera and charging source before a paid shoot.
A sensible setup
Use pass-through only when the manufacturer documents it for the model and the full setup behaves reliably. Otherwise, rotate between a separate charged power bank and wall supply rather than improvising a continuous-power chain.
Understand the interruption risk
A camera recording externally powered video can stop if its input power briefly drops when the bank begins charging. Some banks prioritize replenishing themselves, while others maintain output within certain limits. Check the exact manufacturer's documentation and repeat a longer real-world test before using this arrangement for an event. If you cannot tolerate an interruption, a dedicated continuous supply or charged battery rotation is often the safer choice.
