Waterproof Jacket Breathability: Pit Zips vs Fabric Ratings

Waterproof and comfortable differ
A shell can prevent rain from passing through its fabric while still feeling clammy during a steep hike. Moisture generated inside the jacket must escape somehow. Fabric ratings offer clues, but exertion, humidity and temperature also affect actual comfort.
What pit zips do
Underarm ventilation openings can release heat and moist air without opening the entire front zipper. They are useful during active hiking, though wind-driven rain may enter when zippers are open. Check whether the openings are easy to operate while wearing a pack.

Membrane claims need context
Waterproof ratings and breathability test methods are not always directly comparable between manufacturers. Seams, zipper flaps and the jacket's face fabric determine real weather protection too. An impressive membrane number does not excuse a poorly fitting hood or leaking pocket zipper.
Fit over warm layers
Try the jacket with the midlayer you would wear on a cold day. Sleeves should remain long enough when reaching forward, and the hem should not ride excessively under a backpack belt. A high collar may protect from wind but can become uncomfortable when fully zipped.
Care preserves function
Water-repellent treatments can wear over time, causing the face fabric to wet out even if an underlying membrane remains intact. Follow the maker's washing and reproofing instructions. Abrasion from backpack straps can affect the fabric and any coatings.
Choose for activity
For lower-output walking in steady rain, reliable waterproof construction may be the priority. For strenuous climbs, usable ventilation and fit can matter just as much. Carry appropriate insulation and avoid assuming a thin shell provides meaningful warmth by itself.
Test ventilation while moving
Try the shell on a brisk walk with the same clothing you would wear on a rainy hike. Open and close the underarm vents and notice how quickly excess heat escapes. A jacket may be waterproof enough for the weather yet uncomfortable when you climb. Compare hood adjustment, pack compatibility and where the vents sit beneath shoulder straps before committing to a purchase.
