Camera Wrist Strap Anchor: Cord Loop vs Metal Mounting Ring

The attachment is the weak link
A wrist strap is only as dependable as its connection to the camera. Some compact cameras use narrow fabric or cord slots, while others provide metal eyelets or screw-mounted accessories. Fitting the wrong attachment can damage the camera or fail under load.
Cord loops suit narrow slots
A properly specified thin cord can pass through camera attachment points too small for a metal clip. It needs good abrasion resistance and a secure knot or sewn joint. Repeated rubbing against sharp edges can damage fibres long before the strap itself looks worn.

Metal fittings need compatibility
A suitable ring can connect a wider strap to certain camera lugs. It may rattle against the body or scratch nearby finishes if not protected. A ring that appears physically compatible should still be checked against the maker's intended mounting design.
Tripod sockets are different
Some accessory straps use a connector in the camera's tripod mount. This should only be used when specifically designed and rated for retention. It may obstruct mounting a tripod plate or interfere with battery doors, and the attachment screw needs regular inspection.
Load includes accessories
A microphone, battery handle or lens can increase the camera's carried mass. Check the manufacturer's stated strap and anchor load recommendations. A retention strap helps with a slip but does not make deliberate drops or risky handling safe.
Choose the supported anchor
Use the camera's intended strap point whenever possible. Cord loops are practical for narrow slots, while metal rings suit designs intended for them. The correct attachment is the one that stays secure without rubbing or obstructing controls.
Check the complete setup
Inspect anchor wear before a long filming walk. With the camera supported in your other hand, confirm that the strap connection is seated and does not unwind. Replace abraded cords or deformed rings before relying on them near pavement or water.
