SD Card Reader Placement: Direct Laptop Plug vs Desk Cable

Physical placement affects reliability
A reader that plugs directly into a laptop saves one cable, while a reader on a short lead can rest on a desk. Both must support the actual card standard and host data mode. Their main difference during travel may be connector strain rather than nominal speed.
Direct plugs reduce clutter
A tiny reader can be convenient when packing a light editing kit. It may block adjacent laptop ports or protrude where a passing hand can knock it. Check that the card slot remains accessible without pulling on other connected devices.

Cable readers can sit securely
A short detachable or integrated lead can keep the reader flat on a table, particularly when inserting large SD cards. Poorly rated cables can limit transfer speeds, however. A USB-C-shaped end does not prove the lead supports fast USB data.
Support the whole chain
A card reader, hub and portable SSD may share one laptop interface. Data speed depends on supported bus modes and what else is connected. Avoid copying client video while the reader is hanging from a loose adapter that could disconnect unexpectedly.
Card compatibility comes first
UHS-I and UHS-II media have different potential transfer performance, and CFexpress needs an appropriate separate interface. A multi-slot reader is not necessarily capable of using all slots at top speed at the same time.
Choose for the workstation
Direct plug models suit simple mobile transfers when there is clearance. Cable-based readers can be safer on a crowded desk. Verify both card format and laptop port support before considering the physical design.
Try the actual arrangement
Import a representative folder and check that the copied videos open properly. Avoid removing a card before all operations complete, and keep originals until independently verified backups exist. A reliable supported position is worth more than a tiny reader that repeatedly gets bumped.
