Tenba BYOB 9 vs BYOB 10: Which Insert Fits Your Camera and Bag?

Quick verdict

Buy the BYOB 9 Camera Insert when your compact kit fits its padded interior and you want to preserve space in an everyday bag. Buy the BYOB 10 Camera Insert when you need more height and width for the camera-and-lens combination you actually carry. Neither is a sensible purchase until you check both fit stages: equipment inside insert, then loaded insert through the opening of the outer bag. This guide compares black models 636-628 and 636-630.

Keep the product names straight

Tenba sells separate BYOB Camera Insert and BYOB DSLR Backpack Insert designs. A listing headed simply 'BYOB 10' is not precise enough. The standard 10 discussed here measures 27 × 20 × 11cm externally, in width × height × depth order. The taller DSLR Backpack Insert is a different product. Match the full name, model number and dimensions before comparing prices; a colour or similarly named version can conceal the wrong shape.

What changes between these two sizes

Tenba gives the 9 an interior of 22W × 15H × 9D cm and the 10 an interior of 25W × 19H × 10D cm. The 10 therefore adds more height and width than depth. That matters if the camera's grip or lens arrangement is the limiting dimension. It does not mean every larger DSLR fits. Dividers, lens hoods and the shape of the grip affect the usable arrangement, so leave room for the lid to close without pressing on equipment.

The outer bag can be the limiting factor

The 9's published exterior is 23W × 17H × 10D cm, versus 27W × 20H × 11D cm for the 10. Measure the narrowest part of your bag's opening as well as its interior. A wide base with a short zipper opening can frustrate loading. Allow space for the insert's pockets when filled, and check whether a laptop or water bottle will crowd the camera compartment. A paper or cardboard mock-up can reject an obviously poor fit before ordering.

Who should choose each size

Choose the 9 for a smaller camera-and-lens kit when an existing tote or backpack already carries your other essentials well. Skip it if fitting the camera means removing a lens you need attached for frequent use. Choose the 10 if the extra clearance fixes that problem and your outer bag accepts it comfortably. Skip the 10 if it consumes the space you need for commuting items; nominal spare capacity is not useful when it makes the whole bag awkward.

Protection and access have limits

These are soft camera inserts intended for use inside another bag, not rigid transport cases. Both current black Camera Insert pages list a removable shoulder strap, but that does not make either a substitute for every dedicated camera bag. Consider how you will reach the lid through your outer bag and where loose items could fall. Keep liquids separately contained. Water-repellent fabric should not be treated as proof that a fully packed everyday bag can withstand sustained rain.

Best value and the upgrade decision

If both sizes fit your equipment, the 9 is the more space-efficient choice. If the 10 avoids a cramped fit or repeated lens removal, that is a useful reason to pay more. An insert can be better value than replacing a comfortable everyday bag, provided the outer bag supports the resulting load. If you need purpose-built side access, a more supportive harness or a much larger kit, compare a dedicated camera backpack instead of forcing an insert solution.

Final choice and ordering check

My research-based choice is the smallest insert that closes freely around your normal kit and loads easily into the bag you own. For many compact kits that points to the 9; for a taller or wider arrangement it points to the 10. Check the return policy, exact SKU and dispatch date. Tenba's direct page for the black 10 showed a stock delay during this research, which does not establish availability at other sellers. The country links below are searches, so confirm the selected listing before ordering.
