Quick verdict

Buy the Ulanzi TH04 if your main goal is to point a camera straight down over a solid desk for unboxings, crafts or product demonstrations. Choose the Manfrotto Befree Advanced AS twist aluminum tripod if you need a flexible travel support for still photos, stationary video and outdoor work. A travel tripod and an overhead desk boom solve different shooting problems; the higher-rated payload does not make either one interchangeable.

Why these two supports are so different

The TH04 attaches to a tabletop with a C-clamp. Its arm bends into an overhead position while the camera hangs away from the table edge. It therefore clears the central work area without forcing tripod legs beneath the table. The Befree Advanced AS stands independently on three legs and positions its camera above a ball head. It is useful in places where there is no table edge to clamp to, but it does not inherently extend the camera across a table.

Published specifications that matter

According to Ulanzi's own specifications, the TH04 weighs approximately 1.58 kg, reaches up to 910 mm, fits a tabletop edge up to 68 mm thick and supports a maximum 2 kg equipment payload. It features a quick-release system compatible with Uka, F38 and Arca-type plates as described by Ulanzi. This is a tabletop-mounted arm and not a freestanding tripod.

The Manfrotto Befree Advanced AS twist aluminum kit identified by MKBFRTA4FB-BH is listed by Manfrotto at 1.51 kg, with a closed length of 40 cm, maximum working height of 150 cm and safety payload rating of 9 kg under UNI/PdR 105:2021. It includes a ball head and carrying bag. This is a particular AS twist model; specifications for older Befree variants can be different, so do not mix their model numbers.

The camera weight is only one stability consideration

An overhead arm supports the camera some distance from its clamp. Even if the camera weighs less than 2 kg, its leverage can flex or tip a thin folding table. Check the full mounted weight of camera, lens, battery, plate and any adapters. Check that the clamp contacts a rigid flat section of furniture rather than a rounded plastic lip. Never place an expensive camera above a person, and never assume a clamp that feels tight is permanently safe.

A conventional tripod distributes camera weight through its legs, but that does not mean a user can safely attach a random extension arm and swing a camera a long way out to one side. Such additions introduce leverage and can exceed practical stability even when the tripod has a reassuring advertised payload rating. Treat a freestanding horizontal boom as a separate specialized rig with its own instructions.

Which makes the better unboxing station?

For a sturdy desk used repeatedly for overhead box openings, I would choose the Ulanzi TH04. Its defining advantage is a relatively direct path to a true top-down viewpoint. Set the camera low over a padded work surface first, tighten all joints, confirm the plate lock and run a gentle vibration test. Once the rig is stable, make a mark on the desk so that the same framing can be recreated later.

A Befree tripod is better if you also want to take the support outside, film talking-head pieces or capture landscape photographs. It can hold a camera at standing height and fold into a travel bag. To frame an unboxing from a tripod, you might position the legs around the work area and angle the camera down, but the lens may not end up directly above the centre of a wide table.

Packing and setup

The Manfrotto's 40 cm folded length makes it easy to compare against luggage and backpack compartments. The Ulanzi folds but must be secured to compatible furniture each time. If you regularly shoot at a rented venue, holiday accommodation or hotel, a freestanding tripod is more adaptable because suitable clamp edges are not guaranteed. If your workspace is permanent, the desk boom removes the annoyance of tripod legs in your walkway.

Image quality isn't improved just by the support

A stable camera helps prevent motion blur and framing drift, but an overhead support does not improve low-light performance, lens sharpness or focus by itself. Good diffuse lighting, manual white balance and a clean contrasting surface often make more visible difference to a product review. Position your lamps so the arm does not cast a line-shaped shadow across glossy packaging. Use short test clips to check focus, exposure changes and camera shake caused by handling boxes.

Who should buy and who should skip

Buy the TH04 if you own a compatible lightweight camera or phone and have a rigid desktop with a clamping edge no thicker than 68 mm. Skip it if your full camera configuration exceeds its 2 kg rated capacity, or the table moves or flexes too much. Buy the Befree Advanced AS if you want a portable general-purpose tripod and will use its ball head for stills or fixed video. Skip it if your only requirement is a camera directly above the middle of an unboxing table; it is not a ready-made lateral boom.

Practical buying checklist

Before ordering, confirm that the retailer's listing is the correct model: TH04 (also identified as T088 in some Ulanzi materials) or Manfrotto MKBFRTA4FB-BH. Read what quick-release plate and phone adapter come in the exact bundle. Measure your tabletop thickness; weigh the complete mounted camera kit; check whether the camera's battery or SD card door remains accessible; and verify seller, price and return conditions separately for U.S. and Canadian stores.

Final recommendation

Choose the TH04 for dedicated, compact overhead unboxing on a rigid desk. Choose the Befree Advanced AS for varied camera work and travel. Rather than purchasing both immediately, buy the support that fixes the most frequent framing problem in your actual shooting routine. Neither manufacturer's load rating is a substitute for assessing the full support system.
