Why this matters

LED video lights may appear steady to the eye but show flicker or bands in recorded footage. The effect can depend on how the light is dimmed and how the camera samples exposure. A bright advertised lamp is not necessarily suitable for every recording frame rate.

First design in practice

Some LED drivers modulate light output in pulses, particularly at lower brightness settings. The camera's rolling shutter may reveal that modulation as moving or stationary bands. Quality differs among products and operating modes.

Alternative strengths and trade-offs

Changing shutter speed or frame rate can sometimes reduce visible banding, but these choices also affect motion rendering. Don't change the entire video workflow blindly to compensate for an unsuitable light. Test the intended combination before buying more equipment.

Check compatibility

Multiple household lights may flicker differently, especially when mixed with daylight or other fixtures. A powered LED panel should use its supported adapter and remain ventilated. Avoid modifying electrical connections to alter the dimming behavior.

Maintenance and safety

Colour temperature and brightness claims are separate from flicker performance. A light that looks accurate and soft in a photograph may still create unwanted video artefacts. Review reliable video tests and published flicker specifications where available.

What makes sense to buy

Choose a lamp proven compatible with your camera's common frame rates and shutter settings. A predictable clean recording matters more than numerous lighting effects or an attractive control screen.

Practical test before depending on it

Record a light-coloured wall at the normal video frame rate and shutter setting, then test several lamp brightness levels. Examine the saved footage for horizontal banding or pulses, not merely the small preview. Keep exposure reasonably consistent and compare with the room lights switched off where safe. A repeatable short test can identify problems before a long talking-head or product-video session.

Different brightness settings

A lamp that appears flicker-free at maximum output may show bands when dimmed. Test the actual brightness levels used for normal product recordings rather than only the manufacturer's demonstration setting.

Compare products

Read the actual manufacturer specifications, compatibility rules and current seller terms before purchasing.
